What to Expect at Your First Visit to Lumiere Dental
A first appointment is the beginning of an ongoing partnership. Here is how to prepare and what our Fairfax team typically reviews with you.

A Little Preparation Helps
When you schedule, tell us why you are coming in and whether you have pain, swelling, sensitivity, a broken restoration, or another concern. This helps our team plan enough time and identify anything that may need prompt attention.
Bring a photo ID, your current dental insurance or Medicaid information, a list of medications and supplements, and relevant medical history. If another dental office has recent X-rays or treatment records, ask whether those records can be sent to us. Existing images may be useful, although Dr. Allababidi will decide whether additional images are clinically appropriate.
Please also share allergies, pregnancy, recent surgeries, heart conditions, joint replacements, or other health changes. Oral health and general health are connected, and complete information helps us make safer recommendations. For a child’s appointment, a parent or legal guardian should provide the child’s medical and dental history.
Check-In and Conversation
After check-in, our team will review your forms and ask about your goals. Some patients want routine preventive care; others have a specific concern or are returning after time away from dentistry. There is no need to feel embarrassed. An honest conversation gives us the best starting point.
Tell us if you feel anxious, have a sensitive gag reflex, need breaks, or have had a difficult dental experience. We can explain each step before it happens and work at a pace that supports your comfort.
Your Dental Examination
Your first clinical visit generally includes a review of your teeth, gums, bite, existing fillings or restorations, and the tissues in and around your mouth. The exact scope depends on your age, symptoms, health history, and the type of appointment scheduled. We may evaluate for tooth decay, cracks, wear, gum inflammation, changes in bone support, and other findings that deserve attention.
Dental X-rays are recommended according to individual need—not simply because you are a new patient. They can reveal areas that cannot be seen directly, such as decay between teeth or changes around roots and supporting bone. We will explain why an image is suggested before proceeding.
Will I Receive a Cleaning?
A routine cleaning may be completed at the first visit when it is appropriate and scheduled. However, the exam may show that a different type of gum care is needed, or an urgent problem may need to take priority. In those cases, we will explain the findings and arrange the right next step rather than treating every patient the same way.
Building Your Care Plan Together
At the end of the evaluation, Dr. Allababidi will discuss what was found, answer questions, and outline recommended care. A plan may include preventive follow-up, monitoring, or treatment for a specific issue. If several needs are present, we can discuss their order and which concerns are most time-sensitive.
Before treatment, ask us to review expected insurance processing and any information available from your plan. Benefit estimates are not guarantees of payment; your insurer or Medicaid plan makes the final coverage decision. We want you to understand both the clinical recommendation and the administrative next steps.
After Your Appointment
Follow any personalized instructions you receive and contact us if a new or worsening concern develops. Keeping regular preventive visits can make changes easier to identify and gives you repeated opportunities to ask questions. Your recommended schedule will reflect your oral health rather than a one-size-fits-all timeline.
